Cycling the Costa Brava

The Costa Brava

For many people, the Costa Brava is known for tourism. Fortunately, there is much more to discover on the so-called 'wild' coast of Catalonia. Rocks, small bays and lots of diversity in vegetation. The bike is ideal for enjoying nature and the Catalan atmosphere that you will find in the villages.

The Costa Brava runs from the border with France to Blanes. After this, the coast continues under the name Costa Maresme. On the border with France, the Pyrenees run along the coast to the peninsula of Cap de Creus. This peninsula has a wild and rocky landscape, where you will find picturesque white villages such as Cadaques and El Port de la Selva.

Further south - in Empuries (near L'Escala) - you will find a park with Greek and Roman ruins. This park is located directly on the sea and next to a cycle path that runs through the dunes. In this way it immediately becomes part of your cycling route.

Small white villages keep coming towards you – the further south you go. The coastal strip near Begur is rugged with a lot of height difference and for cyclists the coastal road between Sant Feliu de Guixols and Tossa de Mar is a true Valhalla.

Cycling the Costa Brava

The Costa Brava is one of the highlights of the province of Girona. For us, also a fixed part of the routes we offer. We tell everyone: your trip to Girona is not complete without a day at the coast.

When we recommend the 'coastal route', we are almost immediately talking about the spectacular coastal road between Tossa de Mar and Sant Feliu de Guixols. A 15-kilometer road like a rollercoaster - 'up and down' with a constant view of the sea. The rugged coast is at its best here. You have a view of the rock formations, see bays dozens of meters below and the blue of the sea makes you long for a cooling dip in the water.

You will find plenty of beautiful places on the Costa Brava, but we always advise you to go with a guide or a GPS route - especially if you have not cycled here before. Just like in the rest of the province, you have so many route options here that it would be a shame if you ended up on the 'larger' and busier roads.

The Costa Brava is beautiful part of Catalonia. Do you also want to discover where the most beautiful places are? Or, together with one of our guides on the way to the coast? Read more about this our cycling trips.
